Guidelines for Licensing Alan Watts

Thank you for your interest in licensing Alan Watts' material. This document contains information and guidelines for licensing.

Creative Use & Social Media Films

If you are a non-commercial inspirational filmmaker, we thanks you for your interest, and will support your efforts by offering the use of up to four minutes of a talk to make film for posting on YouTube or other social media platforms. What we ask is that you follow the guidelines for creative use below, and attribute the sample or extract to the original source talk, which saves us from answering a lot of emails when your film goes viral! It also enables people to follow their curiosity about the original content upstream to its source.

We limit the number of creative films you may post to two, but if you’d like to make more films or create something different, please come to us for permission. We have a working group that is forging production and marketing alliances with short film creators, and also licensing content for more and longer films. And we will introduce you to the team to begin those conversations.

Guidelines

  • Inspirational, non-commercial short film makers may use up to four minutes of a talk so long as attribution to the source at alanwatts.org is visible 'above the line' or in any online posting.
  • Films must be original and may not violate other’s visual or musical copyrights, and not be used for any commercial purpose including films with brand appearances or promotions of any kind.
  • Filmmakers may make two inspirational films regardless of the number of channels they may contribute to, each using up to a four-minute sample.
  • If you would prefer to make one longer film (up to nine minutes) or more films than allowed for under our creative use guidelines, please contact us and ask about our revenue-sharing model.
  • Due to overuse we are not giving permission for the "Dream any Dream" sample or the guided "Art of Meditation" soundtrack at this time.
  • Films are considered commercial if they promote a product, service, or production, or have any commercial elements.
  • We reserve the right to revoke the use of audio samples in any film that mischaracterizes the meaning of the original content or its intent, exhibits malice, or is in poor taste.
  • Please submit a copy prior to public posting, and let us know if you would like the film to be considered for review on the Alan Watts Organization Channel as well.
  • Commercial licensing is required for any use that promotes a company, product, or service, or uses more content than outlined under the Creative Use policy.
